Let go life: How do people celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival? What are the greetings on the day?

On this inauspicious Dragon Boat Festival, which is regarded as the "Poison Moon" by many, Chinese people practice various customs and ideas to dispel diseases and pray for good health. And, on that day, people used to do things like "hanging mugwort and calamus", "wearing perfume bags", "eating rice dumplings", "racing dragon boats" and "drinking realgar wine".

1. Hanging mugwort calamus

May is the arrival of the beginning of summer, and the Dragon Boat Festival is on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. At this time, it is the time of the epidemic. Mugwort leaves are used in China to treat such diseases. Their fragrance deters flies and mosquitoes. Calamus is an aquatic plant with similar effects.
During the day, people usually clean houses, courtyards, and hang wormwood and calamus on the lintel to prevent disease. It is also said that hanging wormwood and calamus can bring good luck to the family.

2. Wear a perfume bag

Before the Dragon Boat Festival, parents usually prepare perfume bags for their children. They sewed small bags from colorful silk cloth, filled the bags with perfume or herbs, and strung them with silk thread.
During the Dragon Boat Festival, perfume bags are hung around children's necks or tied to the front of clothes as decorations. Perfume bags are said to protect them from evil.

3. Eat Zongzi

Zongzi (zòngzi /dzong-dzuh/) is the most traditional Dragon Boat Festival food. There is a legend related to Qu Yuan's memorial, that in order to prevent fish from eating his drowned body, people threw rice (unlike zongzi) into the river.
They are glutinous rice dumplings made from sticky rice with meat, beans and other fillings.
Zongzi are wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves into triangles or rectangles, tied with soaked stems or colored silk threads. The taste of zongzi generally varies from region to region throughout China.

4. Dragon Boat Race

Dragon boat racing is the most important activity on the Dragon Boat Festival. It is said to have originated from the legend of people rowing boats in search of the patriotic poet Qu Yuan (343-278 BC) who threw himself into the river.
There is another explanation. Dragon boat racing is believed to date back more than 2,000 years, when it was a way to worship the dragon or water god.
Wooden boats are shaped and decorated in the form of Chinese dragons. The size of the boat varies by region, usually 30-60 people are needed to row the boat. During the competition, the dragon boat team paddled harmoniously and in a hurry, accompanied by the sound of drums. It is said that the winning team will have good luck and a happy life in the coming year.
The most famous dragon boat races can be found in Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Hangzhou.

5. Drink realgar wine

There is an old saying: "Drinking realgar wine will cure diseases and harm!" Realgar wine is a Chinese alcoholic beverage composed of fermented grains and realgar powder (arsenic sulfide similar to ruby).
In ancient times, people believed that realgar was the antidote of all poisons and could kill insects and exorcise evil spirits. Therefore, everyone will drink some realgar wine on the Dragon Boat Festival.

Dragon Boat Festival greetings

Every time the festival comes, people always say "happy xx". However, does this sentence pattern apply to the Dragon Boat Festival? "Happy Dragon Boat Festival" sounds quite pleasing to the ear, but because people give the meaning of Dragon Boat Festival to solemn commemoration and warding off evil, it is not suitable.
Therefore, people often wish each other "Dragon Boat Festival good health" during the Dragon Boat Festival, which has also become a trend.
